Lampedusa Turtle Rescue

In Italy’s southernmost island, Lampedusa Turtle Rescue was born. Since 1990, it has been treating and rehabilitating the sea turtles of the Mediterranean Sea. This is possible because of the collaboration with local fishermen and marine authorities. Every year, they receive around one hundred turtles, and thanks to the efforts of volunteers, biologists and veterinarians, these animals can be given a second chance at life.

Their main goal is to spread awareness and educate the public on Sea Turtle Conservancy, through social media but also through educational tours of the centre itself.

Sea turtles are essential equilibrators of the marine ecosystem, and they must be protected. This is not always easy, as this centre is located in a remote area and is 100% dependant on donations.

Thanks to the Equestrio Foundation, Lampedusa Turtle Rescue has been able to purchase a second-hand van to transport the turtles, equipment for the microbiology laboratory, a surgical operations table as well as information and awareness panels dedicated to the public who visit the centre.
